For the first time ever, the Tri-State Tour came to Eastside Billiards on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for a $750-added B/C/D tournament on Saturday, November 7th. 30 of the toughest amateur players in the area came out to compete for a top prize of $670.
Making it to the final four on the winner’s side were ‘08-’09 “B+” Player of the Year, Gary Murgia, Tri-State rookie Kyle Ferris, Wilfredo Albay, and the tour’s #3-ranked female player Yomaylin Feliz. While Albay crushed Feliz 6-1, Ferris defeated Murgia in a close 7-5 match.
This set Kyle Ferris and Wilfredo Albay for the winner’s side finals, where they battled to hill-hill, but Albay took the tie-breaking game to guarantee a spot in the finals.
Meanwhile, Geoffrey Bauer was having a tear through the one-loss side, including wins over Patrick Meyers (7-4), Teddy Lubis (7-3), and Yomaylin Feliz (7-4) to land in the quarterfinal match against Robert Kight. Prior to that, Kight sent Gary Murgia packing with a 7-5 defeat, but couldn’t get past Geoffrey Bauer, falling by the same score, 7-5.
With only three players remaining in this event, Geoffrey Bauer faced Kyle Ferris to determine who would move on to the finals against Wilfredo Albay. Ferris and Bauer’s match went right down to the wire, but Bauer would come out on top at 7-6.
Geoffrey Bauer and Wilfredo Albay would be the final to players in a race to seven to determine the champion. Albay had thus far run through Mike Davie (6-2), Bhavin Patel (6-2), Robert Kight (7-2), Yomaylin Feliz, then Kyle Ferris to land in the final match.
In this final, Albay started ahead out of the gate at 3-1, then traded racks with Bauer to go 4-2. Bauer continue to stay right on Albay’s trail, until they tied at 5-5, but Bauer ran out of steam and Wilfredo Albay closed out the match with a finals score of 7-5 to win the Tri-State’s event at Eastside Billiards.
Congratulations to Wilfredo Albay for his undefeated win, and to Geoffrey Bauer for an impressive 7-2 record at this event!
