The Tri-State Tour

At last weekend’s Tri-State Tour stop at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, NJ, 34 of the area’s toughest amateur players came out to shoot ini a B/C/D event, including Gary Murgia, Joe Fego, Guy Iannuzzi, Mike Watson, newcomer Duane Dailey, and lady players Emily Duddy, Borana Andoni, and Annie Flores.

Making it all the way to the winner’s side final four, Emily Duddy faced off against Mike Watson in a match that would go hill-hill, ending in Watson’s favor.  In the other match was Teddy Lubis and Duane Dailey, also ending in a close score of 8-6 to Daily.  Mike Watson and Duane Dailey then battled for the hot seat, Watson winning easily, 6-3.

After coming through the one-loss side, Pete Brennan couldn’t get by Emily Duddy, losing 7-4.  Teddy Lubis, who had just lost in the winner’s side final four also defeated T.J. Smithers, who had made a comeback through the one-loss side.

In the quarter-final match, Teddy Lubis edged out Emily Duddy by a score of 7-5.  Lubis then faced Duane Dailey who had previously lost to Watson in the hot seat match.  This match also ran close, trading games to go hill-hill, but Dailey came out ahead.

The final was a rematch between Watson and Dailey (almost sounds like we’re talking about golf).  Running until 2am, play started to get sloppy in this match, and the score also came to hill-hill, with Dailey avenging his earlier loss, claiming the trophy and $700 first prize.

Payout:

1st - Duane Dailey  $700

2nd - Mike Watson  $400

3rd - Teddy Lubis  $255

4th - Emily Duddy  $140

5/6th - TJ Smithers, Pete Brennan  $65

On the previous weekend, Saturday, August 1st The Tri-State Tour headed to Sandcastle Billiards in Edison, NJ, where 23 players came out for a $750-added B-C-D event.

Dominating through the winner’s bracket, the final two matches featured Paul Everton vs Gary Murgia and James DiLillo vs Phil Carr.  Murgia, who was named “2008-2009 B Class Player of the Year” defeated Everton 7-3, and Phil Carr barely squeaked by DiLillo in a 7-6 win.

Playing for the hot seat were Murgia and Carr, in another match that would go hill-hill, with Carr breaking through to win 7-6, guaranteeing him a spot in the finals.

On the one loss side, “C Class Player of the Year,” Ben Sadowski made it through to the final four, but was eliminated by Robert Perkins by a score of 7-4.  On the bottom of the bracket, Jeremiah DeLeo knocked out Anthony Robles in a hill-hill battle, winning 7-6.

Robert Perkins then easily took out James Delillo (who had moved over from the winner’s side) by a score of 7-3.  However, Paul Everton, who had earlier lost to Gary Murgia, got by Jeremiah DeLeo in yet another hill-hill finish.

Everton then again had a close call against Robert Perkins, but won 7-6 to move on to the semi-finals against Gary Murgia. Everton continued to push through to beat Gary Murgia twice 7-5 to land in the finals.

Paul Everton then faced the undefeated Phil Carr in the finals.  In this format, the finals were an extended single race.  If Carr, being undefeated, got to 7 games first, he would win, whereas if Everton reached 7 games first, the set would be extended to a race to 9.

In the finals, as a “C” class player, Everton got one game on the wire, as Carr is rated at a “B.”  Everton jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Carr returned with four wins of his own.  But, Everton took the reigns again to lead 7-4, extending the race to 9 games.  Carr couldn’t stay in the match from there, with Everton winning by a final score of 9-6.
