Joey Testa Walks Away with the Blaze Tour Finale, Undefeated!

January 28, 2009

08winner_finale
At Raxx Pool Room, Bar & Grill in West Hempstead, NY, $8,630 and two US Open entries were up for grabs in the Blaze Tour Finale on January 24th and 25th.  With 58 of the best players in the Northeast battling it out for the top prize, there was no shortage hot action as the players turned on the heat in day two.

This event hosted such names as Shaun Wilkie, Joey Testa, Eddie AbrahamMatt Krah, and Rob Pole all driving to make a statement and take away the top prize of $3000 plus a paid entry to the US Open…. however, it was “Jersey Joey,” Joey Testa, who walked away with the grand prize, going undefeated through this tough event.

Coming in runner up in this event, “Get Some” Shaun Wilkie fought a long battle on the one-loss side, including two hill-hill matches against Adam Kielar and Eddie Vasquez.  Wilkie has been having a strong year, including finishing runner-up at the Super Billiards Expo in March, 2008.

The Blaze Pro/Am Tour $6K Added Finale Enters its Final Day with Points Leaders Making a Statement.

January 25, 2009

Eddie Abraham is currently the dominant points leader with almost a 2-1 ratio over second place.

Eddie Abraham is currently the dominant points leader with almost a 2-1 ratio over second place.

The Blaze Tour is down to it’s final day of the season. After a successful season of 32 stops littered throughout the Northeast, the Blaze Tour, which most consider to be the toughest one day tour in the nation, is going out with a bang.

After a grueling season of pressurized one-day events, the Blaze Tour made Raxx Pool Room it’s home the finale in 2009, after having concluding the 2008 season with the finale at Atlantic City Billiards.

Not sure how the change would effect the turn out for the finale, tournament director Jose Burgos was pleased to welcome 57 gritty players to it’s biggest tournament of the year. The format is 9-ball, alternate break, races to 9 games on the winners side, and 9-ball race to 7 on the one-loss side. The 6K added event, which includes the two US Open Entries that are being offered, certainly does serve as plenty of incentive to make the trip to this pool player-friendly pool room in West Hempstead, New York.

The finale is the Blaze Tour’s only two day stop of the season, and looking at how the dust settled at the end of the first day of battle, the favorites are not disappointing.
Coming into the event, Eddie Abraham is the dominant points leader of the season with 8,160 points. Matt Krah holds second place with 4,440 points and Rob Pole, Joey Testa and Shaun Wilke follow closely behind.

The feature match to start the day, in my opinion, is hands down the High Noon match up between two of the emerging sensations of pool: Eddie Abraham vs. Joey Testa “Jersey Joey.” Eddie Abraham is a road tested veteran who has been taking his game to the next level as of late, and is having the most dominant season of his 9-ball career, with an almost 2-1 points ratio than the rest of the field.

Joey Testa, or as most people know him as “Jersey Joey,” continues to make Jersey proud as he proves to be one of the toughest tournament players to beat since Allen Hopkins was hungry on the scene. Joey is an emerging superstar in this game, and he continues to exemplify a “Never Quit” attitude no matter what the score or situation. Joey Testa is currently sitting in 4th place in the points standings and is looking to make a statement on the Blaze Tour’s biggest tournament of the year.

Please read the story for the bracket breakdown for the second and final day of the Blaze Tour Finale.

The Igmar Thomas Quartet Brings Fresh Jazz to NYC’s Cutting Room as Revive Da Live Launches it’s new Evolution Series

Igmar Thomas is the real deal.  A trumpeter on the cutting edge of progressive jazz and hip-hop, Igmar’s sound lit up The Cutting Room’s stage in NYC along with his quartet on Friday, January 9th, presented by Revive Da Live.  A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Thomas has performed alongside such greats as Roy Hargrove, Lionel Hampton, and Clark Terry, which has helped shape his own signature style.

They were the third group to take the stage that night, at a rather poignant time for the Cutting Room, which closed its doors just one week after the show, to soon reopen in a new downtown location.  Although conditions were cold outside, the vibe in the Cutting Room’s pub was warm and inviting.  It featured an antique bar with a print of the classic “Morrison Hotel” Doors album cover.  The crowd was very diverse, ranging from barely-legal to sixty-something.  This is one of the magical things about great music–it attracts fans from a wide range of backgrounds and is bound to engage new listeners.

I had previously seen Igmar Thomas perform at Le Poisonne Rouge alongside emcee Jeru the Damaja and bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding, among others, but I was looking forward to hearing what his quartet sound was like.  Needless to say, the killer lineup that Igmar brought to the table did not disappoint.

US Open 9-Ball Championships US Open 9-Ball Championships

Yes, you could say that Mika Immonen is officially on a tear.  Since his triumphant victory at the US Open 9-Ball Championships in October, the “Ice Man” hasn’t let much stand in his way.

Over the past few months, Mika has held a steadily winning record, also winning the All-Japan Open in November, which ironically featured a re-match against Filipino Champion Ronnie Alcano in the finals, Mika winning by a nine-game margin, 11-2.

On top of that, he and Team Europe captured the much-coveted Mosconi Cup, held December 4-11, which just marked it’s 15th year.  Not only that, but Mika also had a 4-0 singles record at the Cup, defeating all four of his opponents and sinking the winning 9-ball, to gain the title of Mosconi Cup MVP.

Unique Pool Challenge Match at Hennessy’s Steak & Seafood in Chicago, Presented by Dragon Promotions

January 21, 2009

predator-challenge-match

Dragon Promotions has just announced a unique professional pool challenge match that you could call the pool fan’s ultimate fine dining and entertainment experience. This new event combines great food, great music and an exhibition by three world-class pool players.

The location for this event is Hennessy’s Steak & Seafood  & Boogie Nights Retro Discotheque on February 5th, 2009.

If the name of the establishment makes you go “hmmmm…” it should, because Tom Karabatsos, the owner of Henneyssy’s, has given birth to a brilliant restaurant concept that has created some major buzz throughout the “Windy City”.

I watched Tom play a few years ago in Kentucky, and he is a very strong pool player who is committed to the progression of the sport of pool. Tom is a perfectionist on the table, but the passion for delivering a World Class experience for his customers clearly stand paramount over his own pool game.

Hennessy’s  is a definitely must-hit-up on my list… and for those of you who are in the Chicagoland area during that time, this event is slated to be an awesome experience.

Pro Pool Player Tony Robles Breaks Out of the Shark Tank and into the Ocean

Most billiards buffs and pool players have heard of “The Silent Assasin” Tony Robles.  Tony is one of the most recognizable pool players and instructors in the billiards landscape, and continues to be a fan favorite. In 2007 Tony launched a Pro-Am tour called the Predator 9 Ball Tour after landing Predator Cues as his title sponsor. His intention was to do his part to revive the local NY area pool scene with a refreshing unique approach. The result was players of all levels who haven’t played in a while were dusting off their pool cues, to get back into the game. Both Tony and players of the tour are looking forward to their second season as Mr. Robles introduces several new sponsors on the kick off event, February 7th and 8th at Raxx Billiards in Hempstead, NY.

A little over a month ago, Tony had the opportunity to give award-winning journalist, Harry Hurt (who writes the “Executive Pursuits” column for the New York Times and is the author of the new book, Hurt Yourself: In Executive Pursuit of Action, Danger, and a Decent-Looking Pair of Swim Trunks), a lesson in the grace of the game.  I was excited to see the article in print, which was distributed in the “New York Edition” of the New York Times on December 13th, 2008.

Harry Hurt initially sought out Tony Robles because he was looking for an edge against his pool playing buddies back on Eastern Long Island.  After reading the great piece that he wrote in the New York Times, it seems that Harry (or “The Hurt Man,” as he referred to himself after matching up against Tony) was able to gain the clarity and stillness of mind that draws so many people to this incredible sport.

In his article, “Getting Into a Tank with a Pool Shark,” Harry Hurt eloquently writes,”A game of billiards is a total immersion experience for mind and body,” and continued by saying that, “The game demands the concentration of chess, the risk management of poker, and the touch of golf.”  Here is more of Hurt’s insight into the dynamics of the sport of pool… Read more
